Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar is an openly licensed, intermediate level Turkish curriculum developed by Dr. Jeannette Okur.  The Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar textbook and WordPress/H5P site are focused on developing Intercultural Communicative Competence. The four units invite learners to engage with culturally rich print, audio and video texts and use the target language to investigate, explain and reflect on the relationship between contemporary Turks’ socio-cultural practices, products and perspectives. All materials in this Open Educational Resource (OER) are freely available online under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license to any university or individuals who wish to use or adapt them.

This Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar WordPress site, which accompanies the textbook (https://www.coerll.utexas.edu/coerll/projects/merhaba) and Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOHyPBVzLiIwUFgXfxxkcvA) houses a variety of auto-correct exercises built in H5P that give students immediate feedback on their usage of vocabulary and grammatical items introduced in the textbook.

  • Word/sentence dictation exercises train aural recognition and discrete listening skills, as well as pronunciation and spelling skills, and aid learners in memorizing vocabulary.
  • Other online vocabulary exercises involve listening for and using new vocabulary in conversational context.
  • Many grammar-focused exercises also involve listening for discrete items, ie. usage of the new grammatical items, and as such, offer learners guided listening, reading and writing practice.

Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar was developed by Dr. Okur at the University of Texas at Austin and published by the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL) under the U.S. Department of Education Title VI Grant #P229A180003, with additional support from the UT Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services and the UT Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
